Sustainable Times -

Let's Take Action (new window)

To the Editor,

As climate change is becoming a hot-button issue in national media, people are always wondering, “What can I do?”

Well the simple response would be: change your light bulbs, buy local, use less water. Although those simple steps are important, they are not enough to reach the goals that are necessary to sustain our planet.

I attended Power Shift, a national summit on energy efficiency, green jobs, and the future of this country. Students and citizens came together to fight for the legislation that is imperative for our country to achieve.

I was able to learn and connect with other students around the country by listening to panels, participating in workshops, marching to the Whitehouse, and lobbying our politicians. This type of movement and passion inspired me as an individual to take step-bystep action. Instead of just changing a light bulb, or
turning down the thermostat, try and reach further beyond the comfort of your everyday life. Join an organization, become of vegetarian, volunteer your time, speak to your representative or plant a garden.

All over Madison and the University’s campus there are organizations that reach for environmental goals and thrive on the work of volunteers. Research, Education, Action, and Policy
(REAP), Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group (WISPIRG), Slow Food, ReThink Wisconsin, and The Edge Project are just a few of the many groups in Madison working towards sustainable
practices and fighting for state-wide, national, and international environmental activism.

Also, just by planting a garden or joining a CSA you are able to receive the most local food possible. Personally, I think every
citizen has the opportunity and the responsibility to take community or individual action during this urgent time. Take a step outside the lines; many will be surprised at the individual growth, community growth, and environmental achievements
that can be reached from this action.

Sincerely,
Joy Rifkin
