| On a sunsplashed Saturday afternoon, hundreds ditched the car in Madison and instead biked, skated, walked, and (in the case of Janesville resident Ravelle Rosenberg who was dressed as a penguin) waddled up to the Capitol with concern. Saturday's rally in Madison was one of more than 1,300 taking place across the country. Organizers billed it the biggest grassroots environmental protest since the first Earth Day in 1970. Pollution 'wake-up call' tells state to shape up

| Wisconsin's increase in pollution from fossil fuels has outpaced increases in many other states, according to a report from the Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group. Drawing on U.S. Department of Energy Data between 1990 and 2004, the group found that carbon dioxide emissions, primarily from coal-fired power plants and transportation fuels, increased by 25 percent in Wisconsin. Nationwide, such emissions increased by 18 percent. | |
