A group of 40 Wisconsin students with WISPIRG toured the state last
week to generate support for a high-speed rail line that would run
through the state. The students visited ten cities in four days to hold
rallies and press conferences in support of the proposed
Chicago-Milwaukee-Madison-Twin Cities rail route.
The economic
stimulus package includes $8 billion for high-speed rail projects. The
Wisconsin Department of Transportation is applying for $600 million of
that money to bring high-speed rail to the state. High-speed rail is
meant to be an alternative to short-haul air flights or long road
trips, and it's better for the environment and cheaper for consumers
and taxpayers.
