CARE promotes waste prevention, recycling, and composting for the UW-Madison community.
There
is too much waste produced in America. According to a recent study
done by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), "If everyone around the
world lived as those in America, we would need five planets to support
us." UW-Madison is a part of this problem and is not taking adequate
measures to actively lower the amount of waste created.
The
solution to this problem consists of three parts: waste prevention,
recycling, and composting. UW-Madison needs to stop generating excess
waste, improve recycling programs, and promote composting practices.
Madison should serve as a model for how other universities and
communities across the country can live more sustainable,
environmentally friendly lifestyles.
We hope to in the long term, reduce waste produced by the UW by at least 50% by 2010 and to set up a city-wide composting project.
